How Solar Works

When the Sun is producing light throughout the day, a solar panel is able to create DC electricity . A power inverter is used to convert DC to AC electricity, household devices and appliances use alternating current.

A photovoltaic cell uses semiconductors for the absorption of energy generated from the sunlight and converts it into electricity. Silicon is the most common material used in the manufacturing of solar cells to protect the semiconductors. The semiconductors are polarized, making one end have a positive charge and the other a negative charge. A photovoltaic panel is created by applying thin layers of silicon with semiconductors beneath a layer of non-reflective glass. The created in the panel transfers the sunlight into DC electricity that is then routed through a inverter and converted into a household friendly AC current.

Solar energy power is installed for operation in one of two ways. Installed together with the homes current electrical power source or can be installed as a off grid standalone system that generates all of the electricity. A solar energy generating system that is installed into an existing power source is a good option when available because the excess energy is stored in your power grid. Otherwise an off grid system is installed, A battery bank provides for the storage of excess energy for use at night or on cloudy days. The addition of batteries increases the costs, but it is a good alternative when there is no other available power source or when the system is going to be used at a remote location.
